As the saying goes “begin with the end in mind”. First, be clear on the length of style you want and the type of hair you have. What factors does the selection of hairstyles take into consideration?

Hairstyles generally revolve around whether you want short, medium, or long length. The next step is to define hair type as thick, thin, curly, extra curly, wavy, or straight. You will find that the texture and density of hair vary. Each person is different and varies on a grand scale due to genetics. Last you will want to consider if your selected hairstyle will include any hair coloring.

Hairstyle Length

Let’s start with length and what styles to consider for each.

Hair Styling for Long Hair:

How to style long hair opens a wide selection where styling tips and techniques are plentiful. Longer hair offers many styling ideas to fit your needs and lifestyle. Among the most popular long hairstyles would be the following.

  1. The naturally straight or straightened hair with a shiny and silky look. The procedures for properly straightening your hair will have an investment in time and money. but with proper after-care, your hair can remain straight for several days. One good idea to add time to keep your straightened hair is to use dry shampoo. Use dry shampoo as a part of the post-straightening maintenance. This replaces washing hair and straightening again. This could cause more heat damage than necessary.

  2. The list of other styles for long hair includes waves, spiral curls, feathering, layered chop, and bangs of many lengths depending on face shape and client’s wants or needs.

  3. Hair extensions are a great approach to having longer hair right now and can be done in such a way that saves you time on your hair every day.

  4. Long curly hair of all textures can be curled and diffused to bring out its fullness and volume.

  5. The Classic Ponytail high and low work for long hair. Can be amazing for low maintenance and a professional look.

As with all hairstyling decisions, wearing your hair short means determining your lifestyle needs both personal and professional.

Here is a shortlist of the basic short hairstyles organized by type:

  1. Pixie Cut – the styling options for the pixie type is large. Among the most popular are:

While the medium-length works for almost anyone it is important to understand your hair texture, the overall shape of your face, and your personal and professional lifestyle needs.

Medium shoulder-length styles can support those with fine hair. Using styling methods that offer increased volume supports fine hair styling.

One important key to hair styling for thin hair is how the hair is cut.  Professional stylists are in the best position to evaluate and cut thinning hair in preparation for a suitable style. The stylist can use techniques to provide “texture and depth” too thin hair.

Here are several of the top hairstyles for thin hair

  • Bangs can actually work with the proper hair cut

  • Layered hair to add fullness and volume

  • The Pixie cut both stylish and volumizing

Styling Considerations for Hair Type

Thinning Hair: To add fullness and volume to thinning hair use a blow drying process. Put a volumizing product at the root of the crown of your head. You can then blow-dry wet hair to dry. When blow-drying the crown area, where you want to see body and fullness. you want to lift the hair away from the scalp and up going against gravity. Your hair is fabric so treat it like silk and be as gentle as possible.

Thick Hair: Depends on what end style is looking for. Getting a great haircut is a must. When wanting a smooth result, dry from wet to dry down and smooth with a brush. Make sure the brush has tight bristles spaced close together. Taking small sections helps to get control of all the hair.

Tools & Products for Styling Your Hair

The choices in hair styling products and the tools to use are massive today. To help you weed through the maze of choices and advertisements consider the following categorized by Products and Hairstyling Tools.

The best place to start again is to know your hair type and natural texture. Do your research, ask for recommendations and read the labels!

Tools for Hairstyling

Blow Dryers: Quality is important and the lighter weight the better generally. The basic factors to consider are weight, the dryer’s wattage (at least 1,500 watts), and features (related to hair type) such as multiple heat level settings. Broadly ceramic or porcelain-based drying elements and can speed the drying process. If your hair type is thick you can consider dryers made with “ionic or tourmaline” to reduce frizzy hair but if your hair type is thin or fine-textured Avoid this type.

Curling Iron: The recommendations generally are for a “ceramic” curling iron to promote inside-out heating. The size of the curling iron should be related to the size of your curls. You will find the curling iron barrels from 3/8 inch to 2 inches.

Hairstyling Flat Irons: Again ceramic components are best because it is a better heat conductor and more evenly distributed eliminating “hot spots.” Flat irons with narrower plates allow the user to get at areas of the hair that are hard to reach. That said, a wider plate, if your hair type is thick or very curly and smaller sized plates for straighter hair. Caution heat can damage hair and should be limited. Functionality should include thermometer settings

Hair Brushes & Combs: Quality brushes with evenly spaced bristles and flexibility. The various types of brushes have evolved with the expansion of hairstyles. For hair of any thickness the brushes with “boar bristles”.

Brushes designed as a paddle, usually cushioned bases, can work for hair that is straight and long. If your hair type is thick or curly a “vented brush” can assist and support styling. Use a “teaser brush/comb to help you add volume

  1. Understand your hair type before styling, cutting, and coloring.

  2. Keep your hair healthy to enhance your color with a weekly deep conditioning process.

  3. Keeping hair moisturized and “leave-in” type conditioners after your shower help.

  4. Learn the proper techniques for blow-drying (hair type is important here)

  5. Shampooing properly means concentrating on the hair roots. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends this technique

“Concentrate shampoo on the scalp. When washing your hair, concentrate on cleaning primarily the scalp, rather than washing the entire length of hair. Washing only your hair can create flyaway hair that is dull and coarse.”  Read more at Everyday Hair Care

Product Overview for Hairstyling

The many modern hairstyling choices have produced a wide selection of products. You want your latest style to look good and hold as long as possible.

Shampoo: When selecting shampoos that support your hair styling hair type and your scalp condition need consideration. Shampoos with “sulfates” may be good for those with oily scalp and oil-based shampoos for dry skin or scalp. Dry shampoo is used to extend the life of your hairstyle in place of too frequent showering. Use caution with sulfates in your shampoo if your hair is heavily colored or particularly curly and seek sulfate-free products.

Styling: Silicone-based products and styling waxes for hold and texture Wax and hair Gel support adding definition, texture, and choppy styling. Mousse is used to add body and volume to hair. Hair sprays are obviously to hold your style as an alternative to using Gels.

From a styling perspective shampoos that add volume are suited for fine or thin hair. If your hair is very dry you may need shampoos with heavy moisturizing elements. Many styles today have various types of coloring and using a “color-preserving” shampoo will help. Check with your stylist for the best recommendations.

Conditioners: Hair type comes into play for choosing conditioners. For those with curly or wavy hair the use of plant-based ingredients like oils, coconut, argan from the Moroccan tree seed oil, jojoba seed oil from the jojoba bush, shea butter from the nuts of the shea tree, and glycerin (a polyol compound).

Heat Protection: The heat protection styling products support avoiding split ends, reduce hair breakage.

Finishing Hair Products: A texturizing type product for the “beach hair” look. Moisturizers add to control the frizzes and help dryness. Molding creams are used for adding soft curls and waves and support up-styles. Where you find hair that has been over-processed a hair balm product can help.
